Safari Overview

Your Journey

The Northern Circuit represents the ultimate Kilimanjaro experience, offering the longest, most comprehensive, and most successful route to Uhuru Peak. This premium nine-day expedition makes a spectacular 360-degree circumnavigation, providing perspectives fewer than 5% of climbers ever witness. Beginning via pristine Lemosho, the route veers north to traverse the mountain's quieter northern slopes, where you'll experience profound wilderness solitude. This attracts serious mountaineers and discerning adventurers who understand the journey matters as much as the summit. Your journey begins identically to Lemosho, starting at Londorossi Gate through rainforest to the spectacular Shira Plateau. Where other routes turn south, Northern Circuit arcs gracefully north, traversing below Kilimanjaro's dramatic northern ice fields along trails so remote you may encounter no other parties for days. You'll trek through all five ecological zones experiencing the mountain's full majesty in ways impossible on shorter routes. Days three through five showcase unique northern slopes with lunar landscapes, volcanic ash fields, and rock formations creating almost extraterrestrial atmosphere. You'll pass beneath imposing northern ice fields while enjoying unprecedented solitude. The northern perspective offers phenomenal photography extending across Kenyan plains toward Mount Kenya on clear days. The routing brilliance becomes evident in altitude profile: nine days allow exceptionally gradual gain with multiple "climb high, sleep low" cycles. Critical acclimatization time at intermediate elevations allows your body to produce additional red blood cells and adapt to reduced oxygen. This scientific approach produces the Northern Circuit's exceptional 95% success rate - Kilimanjaro's highest. By summit night, nine days of acclimatization versus five or six on shorter routes makes the difference between success and turning back. Summit night approaches from the east, but with critical advantage: you're far better acclimatized than climbers on shorter routes. The six-hour push to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters remains demanding, but superior acclimatization dramatically improves your odds. Choose Northern Circuit if you want absolute best summit chances while experiencing the mountain's full majesty. This is Kilimanjaro elevated to art form, where patience, proper acclimatization, and wilderness appreciation create the ultimate African adventure.

Your Safari Unfolds

Your 9-day adventure across Africa's most spectacular wilderness areas

1
Day 1

Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp (2895m)

Beginning on the western slopes of Kilimanjaro, you drive to Londorossi Gate and trek through dense montane forest rich with endemic birdlife and primates. The trail is shaded and cool, passing moss-draped trees and ferns as it climbs gently to the forest camp. Mti Mkubwa ('Big Tree') camp sits in a small clearing surrounded by towering Podocarpus trees.

Day 2

Mti Mkubwa Camp (2895m) to Shira 2 Camp (3840m)

The trail emerges from the forest into the vast Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro's ancient collapsed calderas. Heather moorland stretches in all directions with giant groundsels beginning to appear at higher altitudes. Shira 2 Camp provides stunning views of the Kibo summit cone rising dramatically to the east.

Day 3

Shira 2 Camp (3840m) to Moir Hut (4200m)

The Northern Circuit diverges from other routes here, heading north around the mountain rather than east toward Lava Tower. The trail climbs to Moir Hut through increasingly alpine terrain with volcanic rock formations and sparse vegetation. This begins the most remote and least-trafficked section of the entire Kilimanjaro experience.

Day 4

Moir Hut (4200m) to Buffalo/Pofu Camp (4070m)

Traversing the remote northern slopes of Kilimanjaro, you pass through an otherworldly landscape that very few climbers ever see. The route contours around the mountain with panoramic views stretching north to the Kenyan plains and the Amboseli basin. Buffalo Camp (also known as Pofu Camp) is one of the quietest campsites on Kilimanjaro.

Day 5

Buffalo/Pofu Camp (4070m) to Third Cave (3870m)

Continuing the northern traverse, you pass through the quietest and most pristine section of the mountain where encounters with other trekking groups are rare. The volcanic terrain is stark and beautiful with lava flows and rock formations shaped by millennia of erosion. Third Cave camp sits beneath a rocky overhang on the north-east flank.

Day 6

Third Cave (3870m) to School Hut (4750m)

The trail crosses the barren alpine desert of the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, a vast expanse of volcanic gravel that feels like walking on the moon. Vegetation has all but disappeared and the thin air makes every step deliberate. School Hut sits at the base of the summit cone with dramatic views of Mawenzi's jagged pinnacles.

Day 7

Acclimatization Day at School Hut (4750m)

An extra acclimatization day at School Hut gives the Northern Circuit its exceptional summit success rate. You take short walks around camp and toward the lower slopes of the summit cone to stay active without exhausting yourself. The guides review the summit plan, and you rest, eat, and hydrate in preparation for the midnight departure.

Day 8

School Hut (4750m) to Uhuru Peak (5895m) to Mweka Camp (3068m)

The summit push begins around midnight, climbing steep scree by headlamp with the stars blazing overhead. You reach the crater rim and follow it to Uhuru Peak at 5895m — the highest point in Africa — as dawn reveals the immense glaciers and the volcanic crater below. After celebrating, you descend rapidly to Barafu and continue all the way down to Mweka Camp in the forest.

Day 9

Mweka Camp (3068m) to Mweka Gate (1640m)

The final morning takes you through the rainforest one last time, with porters singing and the whole team in high spirits. The thick forest air and green canopy are a world away from the barren summit you stood on just yesterday. At Mweka Gate you receive your certificate and say goodbye to the crew who made the journey possible.
