Your Safari Unfolds

Your 8-day adventure across Africa's most spectacular wilderness areas

1
Day 1

Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp (2895m)

After a scenic drive along the western flank of Kilimanjaro to Londorossi Gate, you begin trekking through pristine montane forest rich with birdlife. The trail is gentle and shaded, passing towering Podocarpus trees where black-and-white Colobus monkeys swing overhead. Camp is set at Mti Mkubwa ('Big Tree') in a small clearing in the forest.

Day 2

Mti Mkubwa Camp (2895m) to Shira 2 Camp (3840m)

A long but rewarding day takes you out of the forest and across the vast Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro's three volcanic cones that collapsed long ago. The landscape shifts from heather moorland to open grassland dotted with giant lobelias and groundsels. By afternoon you reach Shira 2 Camp with commanding views of Kibo Peak rising to the east.

Day 3

Shira 2 Camp (3840m) to Lava Tower (4630m) to Barranco Camp (3960m)

This essential acclimatization day follows the classic 'climb high, sleep low' pattern. You ascend through alpine desert to the imposing Lava Tower at 4630m where the landscape is stark and volcanic. After resting and taking in the views, you descend to Barranco Camp below the massive Barranco Wall.

Day 4

Barranco Camp (3960m) to Karanga Camp (3995m)

The day begins with the exciting scramble up the Barranco Wall, a near-vertical rock face that requires hands and feet but no technical climbing. From the top the panoramic views of the southern icefields are spectacular. The trail then crosses several ridges before descending into the Karanga Valley where camp awaits.

Day 5

Karanga Camp (3995m) to Barafu Camp (4673m)

You leave the last water source behind at Karanga and climb steadily through barren alpine desert toward the summit base camp. The terrain is loose volcanic scree with virtually no vegetation, and the air is noticeably thinner. Barafu Camp sits on an exposed ridge with views of both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.

Day 6

Rest and Acclimatization at Barafu Camp (4673m)

A rest day at high camp allows your body to further acclimatize before the summit push. You take short walks around camp to stay active while conserving energy, hydrating well and eating hearty meals. Your guides brief you on the summit attempt — what to wear, when to depart, and what to expect through the night.

Day 7

Barafu Camp (4673m) to Uhuru Peak (5895m) to Mweka Camp (3068m)

Departing around midnight, you climb through the darkness by headlamp, ascending steep switchbacks on volcanic scree. You reach Stella Point on the crater rim as dawn breaks, then continue along the rim to Uhuru Peak at 5895m — the Roof of Africa. After celebrating at the summit you descend rapidly to Barafu, collect your gear, and continue down to Mweka Camp.

Day 8

Mweka Camp (3068m) to Mweka Gate (1640m)

The final morning descent takes you through lush rainforest where the warmth and oxygen are a welcome change after days at altitude. Porters sing celebratory songs as the group makes its way to Mweka Gate. You receive your summit certificate and say farewell to the mountain crew before transferring to your hotel.
