Day 1

Arrival in Kigali

Arrive at Kigali International Airport and transfer to your hotel. Spend the afternoon exploring Rwanda's immaculate capital — visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial and take a walking tour through the colourful Kimironko Market. Kigali's transformation since 1994 is remarkable and sets the stage for discovering Rwanda's natural wonders.

Day 2

Kigali to Volcanoes National Park

Drive northwest to Musanze and the foothills of the Virunga Volcanoes. After checking in to your lodge with views of the volcanic peaks, enjoy an afternoon hike to the Dian Fossey tomb — a moderate trek through the forest to the grave site of the legendary primatologist who dedicated her life to gorilla conservation. Return to your lodge for dinner.

Day 3

Mountain Gorilla Trekking

Your once-in-a-lifetime gorilla encounter. After a 7 AM briefing at park headquarters, trek into the lush montane forest with expert trackers and rangers. The terrain is steep and can be muddy, but the reward is extraordinary — one hour sitting with a gorilla family as they feed, play, and rest. Each group is limited to eight visitors, ensuring an intimate experience.

Day 4

Golden Monkey Tracking

A morning trek to track the endemic golden monkeys in the bamboo forests on the lower slopes of the Virunga volcanoes. These playful, striking primates are found only in the Albertine Rift and are a delight to watch as they leap between bamboo stalks. The afternoon is at leisure — optionally visit a local community project or relax at the lodge with volcano views.

Day 5

Volcanoes NP to Lake Kivu (Gisenyi)

Drive west from Musanze to the shores of Lake Kivu, one of Africa's Great Lakes, arriving in the lakeside town of Gisenyi (Rubavu). The three-hour drive winds through eucalyptus forests and tea plantations with stunning lake views on the descent. Spend the afternoon relaxing on the sandy beach, kayaking on the lake, or cycling along the shoreline.

Day 6

Lake Kivu to Nyungwe Forest National Park

A full day's scenic drive south along the shores of Lake Kivu, one of the most beautiful lakeside drives in Africa, then inland to Nyungwe Forest National Park. The five-hour journey passes through Kibuye and coffee-growing hills before reaching the ancient montane rainforest — one of the oldest and most biodiverse forests on the African continent.

Day 7

Nyungwe — Chimpanzee Tracking & Canopy Walkway

An early start for chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe's dense rainforest. The park is home to around 500 chimpanzees and 12 other primate species including the rare owl-faced monkey and L'Hoest's monkey. After lunch, walk the Igishigishigi Canopy Walkway — a 90-metre suspended bridge offering a bird's-eye view of the forest canopy 50 metres above the valley floor.

Day 8

Nyungwe Forest to Kigali — Departure

After breakfast, depart Nyungwe for the five-hour drive back to Kigali, passing through the country's heartland of rolling hills and patchwork agriculture. Stop at Huye (formerly Butare) to visit the Ethnographic Museum — Rwanda's best museum showcasing pre-colonial culture and traditions. Arrive in Kigali for a late lunch before your airport transfer and departure.
