Arrive at Kigali International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Rwanda's clean, green capital. In the afternoon, visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial — a deeply moving tribute to the 1994 tragedy and an essential part of understanding modern Rwanda. The evening is at leisure to explore Kigali's vibrant restaurant scene and recover from travel.

Drive northwest from Kigali through Rwanda's famously hilly countryside — the 'Land of a Thousand Hills' — to the town of Musanze at the base of the Virunga Volcanoes. The two-and-a-half-hour drive passes terraced hillsides and banana plantations. Afternoon at leisure to prepare for tomorrow's gorilla trek, with an optional visit to the Musanze Caves.

The highlight of your trip. Report to Volcanoes National Park headquarters at 7 AM for a briefing before setting off into the bamboo forest to track one of the park's habituated mountain gorilla families. The trek through dense vegetation can take one to six hours depending on the group's location. Spend a magical, life-changing hour observing these gentle giants in their natural habitat — watching silverbacks, mothers, and playful juveniles.

Morning trek in Volcanoes National Park to find the endangered golden monkeys — beautiful primates with golden-orange patches endemic to the Virunga mountains. They are typically found in the lower bamboo zone, making for a shorter trek than the gorillas. In the afternoon, visit the Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village where former poachers turned conservationists share traditional Rwandan customs, dance, and crafts.

After breakfast, drive back to Kigali with time for a stop at the Inema Arts Centre, a hub for contemporary Rwandan art, or browse local craft markets for handwoven baskets and coffee. Enjoy a final lunch in Kigali before transferring to the airport for your departure flight, carrying memories of close encounters with Africa's most iconic primates.
