Your Safari Unfolds

Your 7-day adventure across Africa's most spectacular wilderness areas

1
Day 1

Machame Gate (1800m) to Machame Camp (3020m)

The trek begins at Machame Gate where you register and organize porters before entering the lush montane rainforest. The trail winds steadily uphill through moss-draped trees alive with birdcalls and Colobus monkeys. You arrive at Machame Camp nestled on a ridge with your first views above the forest canopy.

Day 2

Machame Camp (3020m) to Shira Camp (3840m)

Leaving the forest behind, you ascend through the heath and moorland zone where giant heathers give way to open grassland. The terrain becomes rockier as you cross small streams and gain the edge of the Shira Plateau. From camp the views stretch west across the plateau to the distant Shira Cathedral.

Day 3

Shira Camp (3840m) to Lava Tower (4630m) to Barranco Camp (3960m)

Today is a critical acclimatization day following the 'climb high, sleep low' principle. You ascend steadily to the Lava Tower at 4630m where the air thins noticeably and the landscape turns to alpine desert. After lunch at the tower you descend nearly 700 metres to Barranco Camp, set dramatically beneath the towering Barranco Wall.

Day 4

Barranco Camp (3960m) to Karanga Camp (3995m)

The morning begins with the famous scramble up the Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical rock climb that is one of Kilimanjaro's most exhilarating sections. From the top you are rewarded with sweeping views of the southern glaciers and the route ahead. The trail then undulates through a series of ridges before dropping into the Karanga Valley.

Day 5

Karanga Camp (3995m) to Barafu Camp (4673m)

The trail climbs steadily through barren alpine desert, leaving the last traces of vegetation behind. The air is thin and the terrain is loose scree and rock as you make your way to Barafu Camp, the launch point for the summit attempt. On clear days you can see both Mawenzi Peak and the summit glaciers from camp.

Day 6

Barafu Camp (4673m) to Uhuru Peak (5895m) to Mweka Camp (3068m)

You depart around midnight by headlamp, switchbacking up steep scree slopes in freezing temperatures toward Stella Point on the crater rim at 5756m. From Stella Point you follow the rim for roughly an hour to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5895m, where dawn illuminates the glaciers and clouds far below. After summit photos you descend rapidly via scree to Barafu for a rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp in the forest.

Day 7

Mweka Camp (3068m) to Mweka Gate (1640m)

The final descent follows a well-worn trail through montane rainforest where the air grows warmer and thicker with every step. Birdsong returns and the canopy closes overhead as you leave the mountain behind. At Mweka Gate you receive your summit certificate and celebrate with your crew before transferring to your hotel.
