MachameCamp

Machame Camp is the first overnight stop on Kilimanjaro's popular Machame Route, positioned at approximately 3,000 metres within the mountain's upper rainforest zone. The camp occupies a clearing surrounded by giant heather, hagenia, and tree ferns draped in hanging moss — a primeval landscape that feels prehistoric. Basic but adequate camping facilities serve as the starting point for acclimatization, and the forest canopy above teems with endemic birds and black-and-white colobus monkeys. The transition from the rainforest's humid warmth to the mountain's cooler altitude makes Machame Camp a memorable introduction to the challenge ahead. Climbers gather around the cook tent for hearty meals while anticipating the next day's push toward the Shira Plateau and the increasingly dramatic landscapes above the tree line.
