Safari Overview

Your Journey

This is the short way to the Mara River: four days, three nights, and a flight instead of the long drive. You fly from Arusha over the Great Rift Valley and land at Kogatende in the northern Serengeti, close to the points where the migration herds cross the river. It suits travellers with limited time, photographers, and anyone adding the river to a longer Tanzania or Zanzibar trip. Crossings happen roughly from July to October, so the dates matter.

All three nights are at Savannah Mara River Camp, a seasonal camp placed near the river. Your guide meets you on the airstrip and stays with you for the whole trip, positioning the vehicle for the best angles. Days two and three are spent on the banks of the Mara, watching wildebeest and zebra gather and cross past waiting crocodiles, and between crossings tracking the lions, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas that follow the herds. Day four is a slow final game drive to Kogatende for your flight back to Kilimanjaro, Arusha or Zanzibar. Tell our Arusha team your travel dates and we will advise on timing.

Your Safari Unfolds

Your 4-day adventure across Africa's most spectacular wilderness areas

1
Day 1

Leave Arusha or Kilimanjaro or Zanzibar for Kogatende

Northern Serengeti

Enjoy a relaxing morning in Arusha, taking your time to breakfast and prepare your camera gear for the adventure ahead. In the mid-morning, an Ecological Wilderness Adventure representative will meet you at your hotel to assist with your luggage and drive you through the city to the Arusha Airport. Here, you will board your afternoon domestic flight, escaping the roads for a scenic aerial journey that takes you directly into the heart of the remote Northern Serengeti. As your plane touches down on the bush airstrip, the true wilderness adventure begins. Waiting to greet you on the tarmac is your dedicated Ecological Wilderness Adventure safari guide. From this exact moment, your guide will be by your side every single day, handling all logistics, tracking the wildlife, and positioning your vehicle for the best photographic angles until the very last day of your journey.

Day 2

Full day Exploring the Mara River

Northern Serengeti

Position yourself along the steep banks of the Mara River, waiting in anticipation for one of the most intense and raw wildlife spectacles on earth. You will watch as thousands of wildebeest and zebras gather in massive, anxious herds on the water's edge, pacing back and forth as they build the collective courage to leap. When the first brave animal finally plunges in, the entire herd follows in a chaotic, heart-stopping rush, battling torrential currents, steep muddy cliffs, and giant, opportunistic crocodiles waiting in the shallows. Your guide will patiently position the vehicle to ensure you capture every dramatic splash, leap, and struggle from the best possible photographic angles. Even during the quiet hours when active river crossings are not taking place, the Northern Serengeti remains an absolute powerhouse for wildlife viewing. The sheer volume of the migration herds acts as a massive magnet for the region's resident predators. You will spend your hours tracking large lion prides, solitary leopards resting in the kopjes, and cheetahs scanning the open grasslands, all capitalizing on the abundance of prey surrounding them.

Day 3

The Chaos of the Mara River

Northern Circuit Safari

Our final full day along the Mara River gives you the perfect opportunity to capture any missing shots and refine your photography. By this stage of the safari, you will have witnessed the tense buildup, the nervous energy on the banks, and perhaps the successful and sometimes tragic dramas that define this iconic natural spectacle. You will understand how the herds move, allowing you to anticipate the action and get your camera settings exactly right. Today, your guide will take you to explore alternative crossing points along the river, or you can choose to shift your focus entirely to the powerful predators that shadow the migration. With such an abundance of prey in the area, resident lion prides, solitary leopards, and opportunistic packs of hyenas are never far away. You will spend the day tracking these predators as they patrol the riverbanks and surrounding woodlands, looking for clean, unobstructed lines of sight for intimate wildlife portraits.

Day 4

Depart for Kilimanjaro, Arusha or Zanzibar

Kilimanjaro Region

After enjoying one last bush breakfast in camp while listening to the sounds of the Serengeti morning, you will pack your bags and begin a slow, final game drive back toward the Kogatende airstrip. This drive offers a final chance to capture any parting wildlife shots or landscape portraits before you board your domestic flight back to either Kilimanjaro, Arusha or Zanzibar.

Good to Know

4-Day Mara River Fly-In Safari: Frequently Asked Questions

When do the Mara River crossings happen?

Crossings in the northern Serengeti happen roughly from July to October, so your dates matter a great deal on a trip this short. The herds move according to rain and grazing, and a crossing on a particular day can never be promised. We have no fixed departures listed, so tell our Arusha team your travel dates and we will advise on timing.

What is a typical day at the Mara River like?

Days two and three are spent on the banks of the Mara, waiting as wildebeest and zebras gather and build up to cross past crocodiles in the shallows. Your guide positions the vehicle for the best angles. During quiet hours you track the lion prides, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas that follow the herds, or explore alternative crossing points along the river.

Where do you stay on the Mara River fly-in safari?

All three nights are at Savannah Mara River Camp, a seasonal mobile camp positioned near the Mara River in the northern Serengeti. Staying in one camp means no packing up between nights and short drives to the crossing points. You finish each day back in camp and start the last morning with a bush breakfast.

Where do you fly from, and where does the trip end?

The standard plan has you fly from Arusha Airport to Kogatende airstrip in the northern Serengeti, with a scenic flight over the Great Rift Valley. On day four you take a slow final game drive to Kogatende and fly back to Kilimanjaro, Arusha or Zanzibar. Tell us your onward plans and we will arrange the right return flight.

Is this Mara River safari good for photographers?

Yes, it is built with photographers in mind. Your guide stays with you from the airstrip to the final day and positions the vehicle for clean, unobstructed angles on crossings and predators. The third day is set aside to refine shots, revisit crossing points or focus on portraits of lions, leopards and hyenas.

Can I add this fly-in safari to a Zanzibar or longer Tanzania trip?

Yes. It works well as a short add-on to a longer Tanzania itinerary or a Zanzibar beach stay, because the return flight can go to Kilimanjaro, Arusha or Zanzibar. Our Arusha team can link it with a northern circuit safari, a Kilimanjaro climb or beach days and handle the connections.

Can this safari be booked privately?

Yes. Your guide and vehicle stay with you for the whole trip, and our Arusha team can run it privately for your own group, extend it with extra nights at the river, or adjust it around your flights. Let us know your group and dates when you enquire.

How much luggage can I take on the flight to Kogatende?

Light aircraft to the bush airstrips have strict luggage limits, so pack in a soft duffel bag rather than a hard suitcase. Our team will confirm the current allowance for your flight when you book. Photographers should plan their camera bag carefully and let us know about heavy lenses in advance.

Do I need a visa and vaccinations for a Serengeti safari?

Most visitors need a Tanzanian tourist visa, which you can get through the official eVisa portal before you travel or on arrival at the airport. A yellow fever certificate is required if you arrive from, or transit through, a country with yellow fever risk. Malaria prophylaxis is advised for safari areas, so speak to a travel clinic a few weeks before you fly.

How long is the 4-Day Mara River Fly-In Safari?

The 4-Day Mara River Fly-In Safari is 4 days and 3 nights. The day-by-day itinerary on this page shows where you go and stay each day.

How difficult is the 4-Day Mara River Fly-In Safari?
