This birding safari covers more habitats than any other trip we run in northern Tanzania. It departs on 26 October 2026, as the short rains approach and migrant birds from Europe and Asia start arriving to join the resident species. From Arusha you fly to the Northern Serengeti and the Mara River, then go by road through the Central Serengeti, Ndutu, Ngorongoro Crater, Mto wa Mbu and Lake Manyara, out to Lake Natron, across to West Kilimanjaro, and finish in Arusha National Park.
It's a Tanzania birding safari for keen birders and photographers who want real time in each habitat. Most stops get two or three nights, with morning and afternoon birding drives. You stay at Savannah Mara River Camp for waterbirds and raptors along the river, Enkirari Wilderness Camp for cranes and eagles on the central plains, and Ndutu Safari Lodge for woodland species and seasonal wetlands. Ngorongoro Kuhama Camp is your base for a full day on the crater floor, and Tortilis Camp Manyara for pelicans, spoonbills and flamingos.
The final stretch moves away from the big parks. You look for lesser flamingos on the Lake Natron shores from Maasai Giraffe Eco Lodge, sunbirds and weavers around Osiligilai Maasai Lodge, then forest birds and the Momella Lakes from Ngare Sero Mountain Lodge. There's big game along the way too, so a non-birding partner won't be short of things to watch. Our Arusha team can shorten or reshape the route around the species you most want.
Your 21-day adventure across Africa's most spectacular wilderness areas
We meet you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and drive you to The Scenery Residence in Arusha for your first night. After a cold drink there's time to settle into your room and rest after the flight. In the evening you have a welcome dinner, and your guide briefs you on the route ahead: the habitats, what to look for at each stop, and tomorrow's flight north. It's a good moment to mention any target species. Dinner is included.
After breakfast you fly from Arusha to the Northern Serengeti by light aircraft, over the open Serengeti plains. Pack in a soft duffel bag for the flight. Once you land, your first afternoon drive follows the Mara River, looking for raptors, kingfishers and bee-eaters. The day ends with sundowners and a fireside dinner at Savannah Mara River Camp, your base for the next three nights. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.
A day of morning and afternoon birding drives along the river. This stretch is good for waterbirds: saddle-billed storks, African jacanas and fish eagles are among the species to look for, and there's plenty for photographers too. Around midday you return to camp for lunch and a rest before the late afternoon drive. The middle of the day is quieter for birds anyway, so you don't miss much by taking a break. Dinner is a bush dinner under the stars. All meals are included, with the night at Savannah Mara River Camp.
A second full day on the Mara, with morning and afternoon drives for more waterbirds and raptors along the river. Away from the water, the surrounding plains bring different birds: kori bustards, ostriches and lilac-breasted rollers. It's a good day to fill gaps in your list, or to go back for photographs you missed. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included, and it's your last night at Savannah Mara River Camp before you head south.
Today's drive south to the Central Serengeti is a birding day in its own right, so keep your binoculars close. Kori bustards, ostriches and lilac-breasted rollers are all possible along the way. Lunch is a picnic en route. In the afternoon you arrive at Enkirari Wilderness Camp, a tented camp with views over the plains and your base for three nights. The evening brings a candlelit dinner and time around the campfire. All meals are included.
The day starts with a sunrise drive, when the plains are full of bird calls. You'll be looking for grey-crowned cranes and tawny eagles, and there's a good chance of lions resting under the acacias between bird stops. Lunch is back at camp. Then you head out again for an afternoon birding drive that runs until sunset. If there's a species you're after, tell your guide in the morning so the route can allow for it. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included, with the night at Enkirari Wilderness Camp.
A second full day in the Central Serengeti, split by time of day. Morning drives concentrate on tawny eagles and other raptors. Afternoon sessions turn to the smaller songbirds and ground-dwelling birds, the ones that are easy to drive straight past without a guide who knows where to look. Between the two, you get a sense of how much birdlife sits in this ecosystem beyond the famous mammals. All meals are included, and it's your last night at Enkirari Wilderness Camp.
Today you leave the Central Serengeti for the Ndutu region, known for its seasonal wetlands and good birdwatching. On the way, look out for raptors, and for flocks of flamingos if there's water lying on the plains. You arrive at Ndutu Safari Lodge in time for sundowner drinks, followed by dinner. It's your base for the next three nights, with breakfast, lunch and dinner included. The birding here starts properly tomorrow, so an early night makes sense.
Ndutu lies at the edge of woodland and open plains, and that mix shows up on your list. With your guide, you head out on morning and afternoon birding drives, looking for everything from shrikes to harriers. The seasonal wetlands are good for waterbird photography, so keep a long lens ready. Two habitats in one area means less driving and more time watching. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included, with the night at Ndutu Safari Lodge.
A second full day in Ndutu, split between habitats. Mornings go to the woodland species. In the afternoon you move to the seasonal lakes to watch the waterbirds, with a picnic in the bush along the way and wide views over the Ndutu landscape. If you missed something yesterday, tell your guide and the day can bend toward it. It's your last night at Ndutu Safari Lodge, with all meals included. Tomorrow you climb into the Ngorongoro highlands and a different set of birds.
A scenic drive takes you up to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Ngorongoro Kuhama Camp, your base for two nights. The afternoon is free. You can take a short birding walk around the camp, or simply rest after three busy days in Ndutu. Dinner is by the fire, looking out over the highlands. Evenings up here are cool, so keep a warm layer handy. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.
Today you descend to the crater floor for a full day. The crater holds a lot of wildlife, and the birding is good too: flamingos on the crater lake, ostriches striding across the grassland and crowned plovers near the hippo pools. Lunch is a picnic inside the crater, so you don't lose time driving out. The crater descent fee is included. In the evening you return to Ngorongoro Kuhama Camp for dinner, with all meals included.
After breakfast you drive to Mto wa Mbu, a busy village where people from over 120 ethnic groups live side by side. The cultural walking tour, included in your safari, takes you through the village and its local markets, and lunch is a traditional Swahili meal. In the afternoon you continue to Tortilis Camp Manyara for a quiet evening and dinner. It's your base for two nights. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.
Lake Manyara is one of the strongest birding stops on the route. You spend the day on morning and afternoon game drives, looking for flamingos, pelicans, spoonbills and the elusive African finfoot. The park also gives you a chance of tree-climbing lions and elephants, though neither is ever certain. Back at camp, dinner is a chance to go over the day's sightings. All meals are included, and it's your last night at Tortilis Camp Manyara.
Today you leave the green of Manyara behind for the volcanic country around Lake Natron, a soda lake known for its pink flamingos. It's a very different landscape, and a hot one, so drink plenty of water on the way. You settle into Maasai Giraffe Eco Lodge for two nights and finish the day with a sundowner overlooking the lake, then dinner under the stars. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.
A full day at Lake Natron. Guided birding walks along the shore take you toward the lesser flamingos on their breeding grounds. In the afternoon there's the option of a visit to the nearby waterfalls or a Maasai village. You come back to the lodge for a traditional campfire dinner. Bring a hat and sunscreen for the walks; it's hot down here. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included, and it's your second night at Maasai Giraffe Eco Lodge.
Today you drive toward West Kilimanjaro, an area known for its views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Your base for two nights is Osiligilai Maasai Lodge, set in acacia woodland. Arrive, settle in and spend the evening with drinks by the fire and dinner at the lodge. If you arrive with daylight to spare, the woodland around the lodge is worth a slow walk with binoculars before dinner. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.
A full day exploring West Kilimanjaro. Morning drives bring a new set of birds, including sunbirds, bee-eaters and the white-headed buffalo weaver. In the afternoon you go out on a guided nature walk to look at the smaller details of this ecosystem, the kind you miss from a vehicle. On a clear day, Kilimanjaro sits in the background. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included, and it's your last night at Osiligilai Maasai Lodge.
Today you travel to the green foothills of Mount Meru and check into Ngare Sero Mountain Lodge, a colonial-style lodge set among streams and gardens, for the last two nights. The afternoon is a relaxed birding walk in the lodge grounds, which are known for forest species. It's a good warm-up for tomorrow in Arusha National Park. Mornings on the foothills are cool, so bring a layer. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.
Your last full day is in Arusha National Park, where montane forest, crater lakes and open savanna sit close together. In the forest you look for turacos and trogons, and on the water for waterbirds. Lunch is a picnic near the Momella Lakes. In the evening there's a final toast at Ngare Sero Mountain Lodge to close the trip, and time to go over your list with your guide. All meals are included.
After a slow breakfast at the lodge, we transfer you to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight home. It's a long way from the Mara River, and by now your bird list should be a long one too. Tell us your flight time when you book so we can plan the transfer around it. Breakfast is included today, and no accommodation is booked for tonight. If you'd like to add nights before flying home, ask our team when you enquire.
