A seven-day photographic safari timed for the 2027 wildebeest calving season, with departures from January to late February. It takes in Tarangire or Lake Manyara, depending on conditions, then the Ngorongoro Crater and the Ndutu plains of the southern Serengeti. On the plains, thousands of calves are born each day and lions, cheetahs and hyenas follow them. Groups are limited to 9 people in 3 stretched Land Cruisers, each guest with a window seat, and the guiding is geared to photographers chasing fast action and difficult light.
You arrive to a quiet first night at The Scenery Residence in Arusha. Day two is a game drive for elephants and resident wildlife before a night at Marera Valley Lodge in Karatu. Day three is a full day on the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater, looking for black rhino, lion prides, flamingos and big-tusked bull elephants. From there, Savannah Ndutu Camp is your base for the rest of the safari: sunrise and sunset drives around Lake Ndutu, time tracking big cats, and an optional Maasai village visit. Your journey begins the moment you step off the plane at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). After clearing customs, you’ll be met by our team and driven to The Scenery Residence in Arusha. It’s the perfect place to shake off the jet lag. Dinner is a relaxed affair fresh, local fusion prepared by the house chef letting you settle in before the early morning drive into the bush.
Leave after leisurely breakfast to Tarangire National Park or Lake Manyara National Park, depending on the season. This gives you the best photographic opportunity for elephants and other resident animals before heading on to Karatu.
In the early morning, we can often watch banks of cloud lift off the Crater as the sun penetrates an already magical setting. We descend more than 2,000 feet on steep tracks cut into the crater wall to reach the open plains of the Crater floor. The Ngorongoro Crater is undoubtedly the best place in Tanzania to view black rhino as well as large prides of lion that include magnificent black-maned males. It is also home to huge herds of wildebeest and zebra and many other plains game, such as Thomson's gazelle. An alkaline lake in the floor of the Crater provides a habitat for colorful flamingo and a variety of other water birds. Massive bull elephants feed in the swamps, some adorned with enormous tusks. In the mid-afternoon we climb out of the Crater and continue west to Savannah Ndutu Camp, your base for the rest of the safari.
Explore the beautiful Lake Ndutu region, famous for flamingos, waterbirds, and reflection shots. Drive through the southern Serengeti, known for its open plains and big cat sightings. Capture wide-angle landscapes, dramatic skies, and wildlife portraits. Sunset game drive for silhouettes of acacia trees and wildebeest herds.
Spend the morning tracking lions and cheetahs in action, guided by expert trackers. Optional visit to a Maasai village to photograph colorful traditional culture. Afternoon leisure at camp or another sunset safari for your final golden-hour shots.
A final full day on the Ndutu plains. With the calving herds close by, your guide plans the day around the light: out early for sunrise, back to wherever the predators have been active, and a last golden-hour drive near Lake Ndutu before dinner at Savannah Ndutu Camp.
After a leisurely farewell breakfast with your guides at the camp, enjoy a final morning at leisure before transferring to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure flight. Reflect on an extraordinary week witnessing one of nature's greatest spectacles — the wildebeest calving season in the Serengeti. No. River crossings occur between July and October when the herds move north toward the Mara River. This safari focuses exclusively on the calving season (birthing) on the southern plains.
Because thousands of vulnerable calves are born daily, the Ndutu area becomes a prime hunting ground. You have exceptional chances of capturing cheetahs, lions, leopards, and hyenas tracking prey or in active hunts.
The wildebeest are drawn to Ndutu’s volcanic soils, which produce grass rich in calcium and potassium needed for lactating mothers. You stay at Savannah Ndutu Camp from the night of Day 3 through Day 6, giving you three full days (Days 4 to 6) in the calving grounds to catch both births and hunts without rushing.
Bring a versatile setup. A 100-400mm or 200-600mm telephoto lens is essential for close-up wildlife shots and action tracking. A secondary body with a 24-70mm lens is great for wide landscape shots or animals approaching close to the vehicle.
Most dedicated photo operators provide safari beanbags to balance long lenses on the vehicle window frames or roof hatches. Tripods are mostly unusable inside the vehicles but are good for camp photography or at night.
