Tarangire National Park Day Trip

It takes about two hours each way. We leave Arusha at around 6:30 AM to reach the park while the animals are active and return you by about 6:30 PM, with morning and afternoon game drives in between. Pickup and drop-off are from your hotel in Arusha.

The dry season, roughly June to October, is the best time, as elephants and other animals gather along the Tarangire River when water elsewhere dries up. Tarangire is good year round, and the green season brings lush scenery and baby animals. Ask us for your date and we will confirm the day trip.

Elephants are the main draw, with herds of fifty or more often seen drinking, playing and dust-bathing along the Tarangire River. You are also likely to see giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and buffalo, and the park holds lion, leopard and the shy lesser kudu. Sightings vary by season, and your guide adapts the route on the day.

Yes. It is one of the closest major parks to Arusha, so you get a full day of game viewing with morning drives along the riverine habitats and afternoon drives across the open savannah. It works well if you have a single free day before or after another trip, or want a taste of safari without staying overnight.

Lunch is a gourmet picnic served at a scenic site inside the park, in the shade of a giant baobab tree. It breaks up the day between the morning and afternoon drives, so you stay in the park rather than heading out for a meal, and it is a good chance to look at the ancient baobabs up close.

Yes. You travel in a private 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof and your own professional guide, so the day runs at your pace and everyone has a clear view for photos. It runs even for a single traveller. Tell our Arusha team your hotel and date when you enquire.

Wear neutral-coloured clothes and bring a warm layer for the early start, as mornings can be cool before the day heats up. Add a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens. Insect repellent is useful, as tsetse flies can be present in parts of the park.

Most visitors need a Tanzanian tourist visa, which you can apply for through the official eVisa portal before you fly or obtain on arrival. A yellow fever certificate is required if you arrive from, or transit through, a country with yellow fever risk. Malaria prophylaxis is advised for the safari areas, so see a travel clinic a few weeks before you leave.
