Contribute to the science that saves elephants
Join elephant behavior research and conservation efforts
Join a working elephant research programme in one of Tanzania's key elephant habitats and contribute real data to long-term conservation science. This isn't observation from a distance — you'll work alongside researchers in the field, learning identification techniques, recording behavioural data, and building the datasets that drive protection strategies. Each day begins with an early-morning field session, following elephant family groups in a research vehicle. Using photo-identification methods — matching ear shapes, tusk patterns, and body features — you'll help catalogue individuals and track their movements, social bonds, and breeding status. Researchers explain elephant communication, from the low-frequency rumbles that carry across kilometres to the subtle body language that signals mood and intent. Afternoon sessions focus on data analysis: entering field observations into research databases, reviewing camera-trap footage, and mapping movement corridors. Evening lectures from senior researchers cover elephant ecology, the ivory trade's impact, human-elephant conflict mitigation, and the programme's broader conservation goals. The programme runs from a comfortable research camp with shared accommodation, communal dining, and basic but adequate facilities. Participants join for a minimum of seven days, which allows enough time to learn the identification system, build meaningful datasets, and understand the research methodology. No prior scientific experience is needed — just patience, attention to detail, and a passion for elephant conservation. You'll receive a participation certificate and a summary of the data you contributed.
