Your Experience

Learn traditional African crafts from local artisans

Sit down with a master artisan and learn a traditional African craft from scratch. This hands-on workshop connects you with the artistic traditions that have defined East African culture for generations — and you'll take home a finished piece you made yourself. Choose from several craft disciplines depending on availability and location: Maasai beadwork, where you learn the colour symbolism and weaving patterns used in ceremonial jewellery; Tingatinga painting, the vibrant, cartoon-like art style born in Dar es Salaam in the 1960s; traditional wood carving in the Makonde style, famous for its abstract, interlocking human figures; or batik fabric printing using hot wax resist techniques. Each workshop is led by a practising artisan who earns their livelihood from their craft. They'll guide you step by step — from selecting materials to mastering the technique to finishing your piece. The pace is unhurried; this is as much about conversation and cultural exchange as it is about the craft itself. Workshops typically last two to three hours and take place in the artisan's own studio or in a village community space. They're suitable for all ages and no artistic skill is required — beginners produce surprisingly beautiful work with patient guidance. Your workshop fee supports the artisan directly and contributes to local craft cooperative programmes that train young people in traditional skills.
