Talek Area

The Talek area follows the Talek River in the eastern part of the Masai Mara National Reserve, close to the reserve's eastern boundary and the small Talek settlement. Ecological Wilderness Adventure can arrange access by light aircraft to nearby Mara airstrips or by road from Nairobi, and will tailor the logistics to your itinerary.

The Talek area is one of the most wildlife-rich zones of the Mara, and its river line combined with surrounding open plains makes it a standout area for lion, leopard and cheetah sightings. Because it sits in the eastern Mara, it is often less crowded than some of the central plains.

Several community conservancies border the reserve around Talek, including Naboisho and Olare Motorogi. They offer exclusive, low-density wilderness experiences where activities such as guided walking safaris, night drives and off-road viewing are generally permitted, unlike inside the national reserve.

The Talek River flows through the eastern Mara toward its confluence with the Mara River, so the area sits within reach of the seasonal wildebeest movement and river-crossing country. The migration is unpredictable and seasonal, typically passing through the Mara around July to October, so it is best treated as a bonus rather than a guarantee.

Game viewing in the Talek area is strong year-round, with the drier months from roughly June to October generally offering the easiest conditions and the highest concentrations of wildlife. Ecological Wilderness Adventure can advise on timing based on what you most want to see.
