When is the best time to go for the wildebeest calving?
+
This trip is built around the Green Season, when the wildebeest herds drop their calves on the southern Serengeti plains. The landscape is lush, the herds are concentrated in the south and predators follow the newborns closely. There are no fixed departure dates for this itinerary yet, so send us your dates and our Arusha team will match them to the calving period.
What happens on the three days in the Southern Serengeti?
+
Days five to seven are spent following the migration herds on the southern plains during calving. Day five starts with the drive in; days six and seven are full days of game drives. Expect wildebeest, zebras and gazelles with their young, and the predators drawn to the newborns, with time back at camp to rest between drives.
What is the cultural visit at Lake Eyasi like?
+
You spend two days at Lake Eyasi with the Datoga people and the Hadzabe, one of Africa's last hunter-gatherer communities. On day three you join Hadzabe hunters on a hunting excursion and learn their survival skills. Day four is slower, looking at farming and fishing around the alkaline lake. Both nights are at Lake Eyasi Safari Lodge.
Where do you stay on this green season safari?
+
The first night is at The African Tulip Hotel in Arusha. After Lake Manyara you stay at Country Lodge Karatu, then two nights at Lake Eyasi Safari Lodge. The last two nights are at Ngorongoro Kuhama Camp in the Ngorongoro Highlands, where the air is cooler. Ask our team about the camp used for the three Southern Serengeti nights.
Will we see tree-climbing lions at Lake Manyara?
+
Lake Manyara is known for its tree-climbing lions and you have a game drive there on day two, but no sighting can be promised. The park is small and still holds plenty of wildlife, including elephants and baboons, and the Green Season vegetation is fresh. A picnic lunch in the park comes before the drive to Karatu.
How much time do we get inside Ngorongoro Crater?
+
A full day on the crater floor on day nine, with the descent fee included. The crater is a UNESCO World Heritage site with one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa, and the Big Five can be seen there. You return to Ngorongoro Kuhama Camp that evening and drive back to Arusha the next morning.
Where does the safari start and finish?
+
It starts at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Your guide meets you on arrival and drives you to Arusha. It finishes back in Arusha on the last day, with lunch and time for some shopping before your transfer to the airport for your flight home. Book an afternoon or evening international departure for the final day.
Can we change the balance between culture and game drives?
+
Yes. The standard plan gives two days to Lake Eyasi and three to the Southern Serengeti, but our Arusha team can shift that if you'd rather have more time with the herds, or more with the Hadzabe and Datoga. Tell us your priorities when you enquire and we'll suggest a revised route and send you a quote.
What should I pack for a green season safari in Tanzania?
+
Pack a light waterproof jacket for showers, breathable layers in neutral colours and a warm fleece for the Ngorongoro Highlands, where evenings are cool. Closed shoes for the Hadzabe walk, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent and binoculars are all useful. The Green Season light is good for photography, so bring spare batteries and memory cards.
