Month-by-month weather, wildlife, migration timing, crowds, and prices — from a TATO-licensed operator with 20+ years on the ground.
The best time to visit Tanzania for safari is June to October (dry season). Wildlife concentrates around shrinking water sources, thin vegetation makes spotting easy, and the Great Migration river crossings peak in northern Serengeti from July to October. January and February are a strong secondary window — dry weather, calving season in the southern Serengeti (8,000 wildebeest calves born daily), and excellent Kilimanjaro climbing conditions. Budget travellers should target April-May for 30-50% lower prices, while Zanzibar beach extensions are best June-October and January-February.
Tanzania does not have a traditional four-season cycle. Instead, it alternates between dry and wet periods, each with distinct advantages for safari.
Every month has something to offer. Use this guide to match your dates with the best experiences.

Different goals require different timing. Match your priority activity to the ideal months.
| Activity | Best Months | Why |
|---|---|---|
| General Safari | Jun – Oct | Dry season, thin vegetation, wildlife concentrates at water sources, easiest Big Five spotting. |
| Migration Crossings | Jul – Oct | Mara River crossings in northern Serengeti — the most dramatic wildlife spectacle on Earth. |
| Calving Season | Jan – Feb | Southern Serengeti/Ndutu: 8,000 calves born daily, intense predator activity, green plains. |
| Kilimanjaro Climb | Jan – Mar, Jun – Oct | Driest conditions, clearest views, warmest nights at altitude. Jul-Aug most popular. |
| Ngorongoro Crater | Jun – Oct, Jan – Feb | Resident wildlife year-round, but dry months give clearest crater views and easiest road access. |
| Zanzibar Beaches | Jun – Oct, Jan – Feb | Dry, warm, sunny. Best diving visibility Oct-Mar. Avoid Apr-May heavy rains. |
| Birding | Nov – Apr | Migratory species from Europe and Asia arrive. 400+ species active. Green, wet, lush. |
| Budget Safari | Apr – May, Nov | 30-50% lower prices. Fewer tourists. Some lodges offer green-season specials. |
| Photography | Jan – Feb, Jul – Sep | Calving drama (Jan-Feb) and river crossings (Jul-Sep). Golden-hour light is stunning year-round. |
Identify your top priority: Great Migration river crossings (July-October), calving season (January-February), Kilimanjaro climb, Zanzibar beaches, or general Big Five safari. Your goal determines the ideal month.
Cross-reference your travel dates with Tanzania's dry season (June-October, January-February) and wet seasons (March-May long rains, November-December short rains). Dry season offers the best wildlife viewing; wet season offers lower prices and fewer crowds.
Peak season (July-October) costs 30-50% more than low season (April-May). Shoulder months like June, November, and early December offer a balance of good weather, reasonable prices, and fewer tourists.
Different parks peak at different times: Serengeti south for calving (Jan-Feb), Serengeti north for crossings (Jul-Oct), Tarangire for elephants (Jun-Oct), Ngorongoro year-round, and Zanzibar for beaches (Jun-Oct, Jan-Feb).
Reserve 6-12 months ahead for July-October and December-January. Popular Serengeti lodges and crater-rim properties sell out fast. Shoulder and low-season trips can be booked 3-6 months out with more flexibility.
The single best month is July or August. Wildlife concentrates around water sources, vegetation is thin for easy spotting, and the Great Migration herds are crossing the Mara River in northern Serengeti. September and October are equally strong for game viewing with slightly fewer crowds. January and February are also excellent — dry weather, calving season in the southern Serengeti, and lush green landscapes for photography.
Tanzania has two rainy seasons. The long rains (masika) run from March to May with heavy, sustained rainfall — this is low season with reduced prices and fewer tourists, though some lodges close. The short rains (vuli) fall from November to mid-December with brief afternoon showers that rarely disrupt game drives. The short rains are an underrated time to visit: green landscapes, newborn animals, excellent birding, and shoulder-season pricing.
April and May offer the lowest prices — 30-50% below peak-season rates. November is the next cheapest month (shoulder season pricing with decent weather). These months have fewer tourists, which means more negotiating power on lodge rates and vehicle availability. Budget travellers should also consider early June and late October when some operators offer shoulder-season pricing with dry-season conditions.
The best months to climb Kilimanjaro are January to mid-March and June to October. These windows have the driest conditions, clearest summit views, and warmest night temperatures at altitude. July and August are the most popular (and most crowded) months. January-February offers excellent conditions with fewer climbers. Avoid April-May (heavy rain makes trails slippery and dangerous) and November (unpredictable short rains).
The Great Migration happens year-round in different parts of the Serengeti. Calving season (January-February) in the southern Serengeti is spectacular — 8,000 calves born daily with predators in pursuit. River crossings happen in June (Grumeti River, western Serengeti) and July-October (Mara River, northern Serengeti). The herds move south through November-December. There is no bad time — you just need to be in the right part of the Serengeti for the season.
Ngorongoro Crater is excellent year-round because its resident wildlife does not migrate. The best months are June to October (dry season, clear views, concentrated wildlife around the crater-floor lakes) and January to February (dry, green, newborn animals). Avoid April-May when heavy rains can make the crater-descent road difficult. The crater rim is 2,235 m above sea level, so it is always cooler than the Serengeti — bring warm layers for morning drives.
The best beach weather in Zanzibar is June to October (dry, warm, sunny) and January to February (hot, dry, perfect for swimming). December through January is peak season with higher prices. The worst months for Zanzibar beaches are April and May (heavy rain) and November (unpredictable showers). Water visibility for diving and snorkeling peaks from October to March. Many travellers combine a dry-season safari (June-October) with a Zanzibar beach extension.
Book 6-12 months ahead for peak season (July-October and December-January). Popular lodges in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro sell out 9-12 months in advance during peak. For shoulder and low season (March-May, November), 3-6 months is usually sufficient. Last-minute deals (2-4 weeks out) are sometimes available in low season, but you sacrifice lodge choice and may miss preferred dates.
