Zanzibar is more than a beach, and this trip gives the island's history and food the same weight as the sea. It's a 5-day island break: two nights in Stone Town, then two on the north coast. It works well on its own or as a few slow days after a safari on the mainland, and suits travellers who want some culture alongside proper time in the water.
You land at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport and check in to a hotel in Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. That afternoon a guide walks you through its narrow alleys to the House of Wonders, the Old Fort, the Sultan's Palace and the spice bazaars, and the evening ends with street food at Forodhani Night Market. Day two starts at a spice plantation, where you smell and taste cloves, vanilla, cinnamon, cardamom and nutmeg as they grow. After lunch you head to Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park to look for the Zanzibar red colobus, a monkey found nowhere else on earth.
On day three you transfer to a beach resort at Nungwi or Kendwa and snorkel the house reef, where turtles are sometimes seen. Day four is yours, with optional paddle-boarding, diving or deep-sea fishing, and a sunset sail on a traditional dhow. Depending on your flight, there may be time for Stone Town's curio shops before you leave. This Zanzibar beach holiday is easy to extend, so ask our Arusha team about hotels and extra beach nights.
