Superbly
located in an
idyllic valley
in the western
corridor of the
Serengeti,
Grumeti River
Camp offers
luxury tented
accommodation in
10 spacious
safari tents,
all with
en-suite
bathrooms and
open-air
showers.
Flanked by two hillsides, this luxury tented camp overlooks a
tributary of the
Grumeti River,
which flows into
Lake Victoria.
Alive with hippo
and crocodiles,
the river is
lined by high
riverine forest,
home to
countless birds
and troops of
colobus monkeys.
Grumeti River
Camp epitomises
the excitement
and romance of
Africa with only
10 spacious
safari tents.
These tents are
decorated with
colourful
African cloths,
locally carved
furnishings and
en-suite
bathrooms with
beautiful
alfresco
showers.
Each year,
during
Tanzania’s
‘great
migration’,
hundreds of
thousands of
wildebeest,
zebra and other
herbivores cross
the Grumeti
River, risking
life and limb to
the jaws of some
of the largest
Nile crocodiles
on earth. Large
pods of hippo
grunt from their
watery hideaway
below the camp
and
black-and-white
Colobus monkeys
live in
Grumeti’s
bird-filled
trees. At night,
the nocturnal
orchestra of
owls and bush
babies is
punctuated by
the primeval
calls of lion
and hyena.
Grumeti River
Camp now offers
ballooning
safaris. The
launch site is
just a 15-minute
game drive from
the camp and
balloon safaris
take off at
dawn, when the
winds are at
their calmest,
so that you rise
with the sun to
float gracefully
over the plains.
Hover at treetop
level and marvel
at the wildlife
just beneath
you, then ascend
to 1000 feet or
more to gain an
appreciation of
the sheer
enormity of the
endless
Serengeti
plains. Flights
last for one
hour and are
dependent on
weather
conditions. On
landing, in a
beautiful
clearing,
celebrate with a
glass of
sparkling wine
and a full
English
breakfast in the
bush.
